Nokia N8 Review

The Nokia Symbian combo has emerged victorious from many a market battle. They were THE things to have a couple of years back. Then suddenly, emerged the Android, and the market battle has never been the same again. Android provided more than what the Symbian could provide in terms of apps and ease of use. And the Android phones came flowing in at all levels, from entry level phones to premium phones. Nokia has been pulled back and its market share had fallen quite some bit. Nokia N8 forms a part of the Nokia-Symbian fight back series and is a premium smartphone. This phone is much talked about and there is a huge hype regarding its features. Does it live up to them? We shall see.

Design:

In terms of design, the Nokia N8 is superb. It looks to follow the superb designs Nokia had created with the rest of the very successful N-series. The body is anodised aluminium, and has glossy plastic on the top and bottom end. It looks and feels like a premium phone indeed. The phone has the perfect curves to make for a great holding experience. The screen is 3.5 inch with a physical button at the bottom. The right side of the phone houses the volume rocker, which has raised points, and hence is pretty convenient. It has a physical slider key for the screen lock and the camera key. The left side has the microUSB port, and the slots for the SIM card and external storage. You have a power button, mini HDMI port and a micro USB port on the top and at the bottom is the Nokia charging port. It has provided one with the feel, look and the options of a premium phone

Build Quality:

The build quality is superb and it can take some rough handling. The thickness is 12.9mm and weight is 135g which make it feel good in the hand. The anodized aluminium body is pretty strong and protects the interiors. The 3.5 inch screen is a gorilla glass screen which protects the phone from scratches.

Performance:

The Nokia N8 comes with the new Symbian^3 operating system which truly adds to its dimension and makes functionality easier. The OS is good and has most of the features that other OS’s produce, but it isn’t as classy or as slick. It’ll improve over time though. The phone packs a 680Mhz ARM 11 processor which might be a little less for a premium phone. To add to it thought, there is a Broadcom GPU. It also has a 256MB RAM which we believe is slightly less for a premium phone. The OS gets the most out of the hardware though, and you won’t notice too many lags, but that alone is not sufficient for a premium phone. The hardware should have been better. The phone has a 640×360 pixel AMOLED camera. The resolution isnt the best you would know of, but the display quality is pretty good. The phone’s highest point is the 12 MP camera with Carl Zeiss autofocus and Xenon flash. Photographs and video are simply a joy, and we haven’t seen better photographs on any other phone. Whats more, it comes with a front camera as well. The internal memory is good at 16 GB and the battery gives a more than average talktime of 12 hours on 2G.

Conclusion:

Overall, the performance may not quite match up to the benchmark set today by other phones. But the design and the camera are the highlights. The Symbian^3 OS needs some more finishing. If you’re looking a durable premium phone with a superb camera, you should look at this one.

LG Optimus L7 Review

Introducing the LG Optimus L7 is a smart move by LG. How many times have you thought about buying a great new device, but had to settle with a lower budget device, which gives roughly the same features, just because you paying for the other device would burn a hole in your pocket? There would be many people who would have experienced this. The LG is the exact same lower budget device which has roughly the same features as the high end premium smartphones, but comes light on your pocket. Obviously, you have to compromise with some things, but well, it’s a part of the game.

Design:

The design of the LG Optimus L7 is simple and stylish. You wouldn’t call it the best looking device in the market, and certainly it isn’t but this will make do. It has a 4.3 inch screen under which you have a lone physical button. There is also a chrome bezel around the screen. The right side of the phone is empty and the left side houses the volume rocket. You have a microUSB port at the bottom (don’t know how convenient that is) and the 3.5mm headphone jack and the power button up top, which is pretty convenient. The phone has a floating mass technology, which means there is a slight curve from front to back, giving the impression that it is slimmer than it is.

Build Quality:

The build quality is not the best. The back plastic cover looks and feels cheap. The phone is not very delicate, and the sturdiness is average. LG has done some budget saving in the design and hardware part. At least the textured exterior of the back helps with the grip. At 8.7mm of thickness and weighing 122g, the phone is both slim and light. The phone fits into the pocket nicely and is pretty good to hold. The exterior can be a magnet for fingerprints and dust though.

Performance:

The performance aspect is the one for which LG was saving, as it is seen as the most important. The Optimus L7 comes packed with a 1 Ghz processor and running on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. It brings ICS to the budget level and hence more people can have this superb experience. The ICS OS is slightly hard even on the 1 GHz processor and 512 MB of RAM and in the absence of a separate GPU, sometimes you may notice a lag. It is good for low end to moderate tasks and wouldn’t be able to handle high end tasks very well. The screen is WVGA and has a resolution of 800×480 pixel. The quality of the pictures is crisp and bright. The camera is 5 MP and like most other smartphones with a 5 MP camera, the image quality is average. The phone comes with 4 GB of internal memory and a 1700 mAh Li-Ion battery that has average talktime.

Conclusion:

On the whole, the phone is a decent one. With a budget phone with some features of a premium phones, you need to make a few compromises. But in this case, you might get a feeling the compromises you need to make are a bit too much. The talking point of the phone, the performance, is also not top notch. Sure it provides a ICS at a low price, but it should have paid some more attention to the other features as well.

Review on Motorola Xoom 2 Media Edition

Choosing a tablet in this competitive market is quite a big headache as there are many interesting tablets which will confuse you. One of the latest models in then tablet market is the Motorola Xoom 2 Media Edition. This tablet is a smaller version of Motorola Xoom 2 but it supersedes the predecessor in few aspects very easily. Motorola for many years are competing in the tablet market and gives users with one of the tablets. The complete review on the Motorola Xoom 2 Media Edition is given below.

Design:

Motorola Xoom 2 Media Edition has got terrific build. This tablet is very compact and very easy to handle and carry around. Metal on the back is very unique gives it a cool and a complete new look. The 8.2 inch screen affects the dimensions of the tablet as you will experience while holding it once. The dimensions of the Xoom 2 Media Edition are 216 x 139 x 9 mm respectively and weigh around 386g only. This tablet is lighter than Motorola Xoom and Apple iPad. The slight curvy edges look very good in the hands.

Display:

The 8.2 inch screen gives 1200 X 800 pixels of resolution and 184 ppi pixels density. Like many other capacitive Smartphone’s and tablets this tablet also supports multi-touch and is protected with Corning Gorilla Glass. Since the screen is small compared to its predecessor, fast refresh rates eliminates motion blurriness giving colorful and vibrant picture quality. The multi-touch feature makes full use of the fact that it uses Android operating system and the powerful hardware. Swiping through the home screen is smooth and zippy and frankly very enjoyable.

Usability and Performance:

Using the Motorola Xoom 2 Media Edition is lots of fun. Powered with the Android Honeycomb 3.2 operating system this tablet gives a very good output. Since Android operating system is sued in this tablet you will be provided with lots of interesting apps from the Google Market. The user interface is fast and very easy to use, if you have used some kind of Android device before using this tablet won’t be a problem. Motorola Xoom 2 Media Edition uses Dual-core Cortex-A9 processor clocked at 1.2GHz and 1GB of RAM. Each and every task on this tablet is smooth and doesn’t hang at all. Opening any apps, using web browser, playing HD videos doesn’t have any negative impact on the performance of this tablet.

Camera and other Features:

5MP camera captures some nice quality images and is able to take 720p video which is very disappointing. The secondary camera is of 1.3MP and is good enough for video chatting applications. There are two versions of this tablet according to the space provided which are of 16 and 32 GB respectively. Provision for microSD card slot is also provided which supports up to 32GB. For connectivity WLAN, Bluetooth 2.1 and microUSB is provided. GPRS and EDGE and radio are missing from this tablet. The 3960mAh battery can last for 6 long hours during talk time which is good enough for any tablet.

Android Apps

One of the things which set Android apart from all the other operating systems in the mobile market is the Android marketplace, which is an open marketplace. Hence, even people like you and me, can develop and put our applications into the marketplace (assuming we know how to). This has led to a number of benefits.

Sometimes, as has happened in the past, mobile phone companies run short of ideas when it comes to developing useful apps. While they develop a stupid health app thinking that it will be very useful to us (and I’m not saying all health apps are useless either), they miss out on a very useful and convenient app which could save our battery. Hence, the people, the customers themselves can feel their problems the best and find solutions to them. And they have. Now, with the Android marketplace you can download hundreds of useful apps which make life so much easier and convenient, developed by another person in another part of the world, who has faced a similar problem.

Today we’ll take a look at some of the most convenient apps developed for the Android market.

  1. JuiceDefender : One of the biggest problems faced by most Android phone owners is the battery(or the lack of it). Sometimes it lasts only half a day and you could find yourself in the office without a usable phone. The reality about the smartphones and high battery consumption is the huge number of tasks they run simultaneously, which drains the battery. Juicedefender(and there are many such battery savers like this one) kills the unwanted apps and keeps your phone memory free. It switches off the Wi-Fi when you are not using it. The result? The same phone could give you more than one day’s charge with similar usage.
  2. Shazam : Now this has happened to all of us. Sometimes we listen to a paragraph of a song and can’t remember what song it is. Or even worse, sometimes we hear the song for the first time and find it so catchy, but we don’t know what song it is, and hence we don’t get to buy/download it. This is where Shazam comes into the picture. You just let Shazam record 15 seconds of whatever song you’re listing and it’ll search the databases and usually come up with the accurate name and artist of the song.
  3. Amazon Kindle app : Many people, especially the ones who have a large phone screen carry their e-books around in their phone and would like to read them whenever they find the time. Amazon Kindle app is one of the best apps which lets you organize your e-books and read them. It makes life much easier by a number of tools it possesses. You can increase or decrease the size of the font, the background colour(if the white background hurts your eyes) and adjust line spacing.
  4. Dropbox : It is an application which was initially made for computers and is now extended to Android. It is a cloud service wherein a server on the internet saves your files, and once you’re logged onto the Dropbox with your ID, you can access the file anywhere. This ensures portability and privacy.
  5. Google Maps : This is one of the best apps ever made. You never need to roam around hunting for houses, or lose track of where you’re going. Neither do you have to keep a huge paper map with you. This application tracks your location through GPS and shows up a map of the surroundings on the mobile screen. It then shows you where you’re going and guides you on your path.

Micromax Funbook Review

Gone are the days when tablets used to be out of reach for a common man, thanks to the endeavour by the Government of India and later companies such as BSNL to produce tablets at very cheap rates so that every common man could own one. Those tablets had the basic functions, but obviously couldn’t match upto the premium tablets in terms of performance. Micromax, meanwhile, came up with a tablet, its first, the Playbook, that claimed to be both cheap and have premium performance. The features of the Micromax Playbook certainly look good on paper, but how does it perform out of it? We reviewed the Micromax Playbook and bring you our opinion.

Design:

In terms of design, the Micromax may not be the prettiest tablet you’ve ever seen, but perhaps at its cost, it isn’t meant to be. Having said that, it isn’t the ugliest tablet either. It uses glossy plastic, which look a bit cheap, to be honest. There are three physical buttons below the tablet, which doesn’t do any good at all to the design of the tablet. We believe that in terms of functionality too it wouldn’t make any major impact since the Micromax comes loaded with Android 4.0, which has virtual buttons. At the bottom, you have a 3.5mm headphone jack, a microUSB port, a HDMI slot(which is much welcome) and the reset button along with the microSD card slot. On the right, you have a power button and a volume rocker.

Build Quality:

The build quality isn’t superb, and Micromax had to compromise here to make the phone come within the budget it wanted. The screen is prone to fingerprints and dust and the back looks to be made of cheaper quality plastic.

Performance:

The Funbook runs an Andrios 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, which is super exciting and is a huge upgrade from the previous versions. It has a host of exciting new features and has superior functionality including better interface and mustitasking capabilities. The screen is 7-inch with a resolution of 800×480 pixels which is standard. The viewing angles and crispness of display is average though. It has a 1.2 Ghz Cortex-A8 processor and a 512 MB RAM which ensure smooth functionality of the Ice Cream Sandwich. Gaming is pretty decent, and it stutters a bit in high end web pages. Plus, there are reports of non-compatibility with certain types of USB modems so you might just want to check. It can play 1080p quality videos pretty well. There is no back camera, and the front camera is 0.3 MP, for video chatting and is of poor quality. The 2800 mAh battery disappointed as well and runs out in around 5 hours of moderate usage. It comes with 4 GB of internal memory which can be expanded.

Conclusion:

With the Micromax Funbook we weren’t expecting much, especially considering its price range (around Rs. 6500). In terms of build quality and design, we didn’t get much either. It looks simple, but what matters more is the performance. And for a phone in such a tight budget, the performance is great. Micromax brings a tablet which is made for the common man, coupled with the amazing Ice Cream Sandwich OS experience. If you’re looking for a tablet that would give you the ICS experience, and have light to moderate usage, this is the best budget tablet for you.

HTC Radar Review

HTC has released a number of phones in the same budget range, most of them loaded with an Android operating system, which are competing for market space. HTC Radar is also a phone in the same budget range, but the difference is that it’s loaded with the much publicized Windows 7.5 Mango operating system, the same as in the Nokia Lumia series. We review the phone and find out all its pros and cons.

Design:

HTC’s white and silver unibody design may not be pleasing for some, but we believe the ‘some’ would just be a minority. The design is sans the loud and vibrant colours and curves used in other phones, but the white and silver combination looks classy and elegant. It is pretty much a case of beauty in simplicity. It has a large 3.8 inch touchscreen and three touch buttons below it. On the right side, the volume rocker and the dedicated camera key are present. On the left, you have a microUSB port and the top houses the power key and 3.5mm headphone jack. The buttons are silver and look stylish on the sleek body. The edges are curved and at 10.9 mm thickness, this would fit well into your pocket.

Build Quality:

It has an aluminium design covering and looks and feels like a premium phone. You can rely on HTC when it comes to build. The back feels soft and is a good grip. At 137 gram, it is a bit on the heavier side. The phone is solid and compact and can withstand a few knocks. The disadvantage of the unibody design is that the customer cannot replace the battery himself.

Performance:

The HTC Radar comes with a 1Ghz Scorpin Qualcomm processor supported by Adreno 205 graphics card. It also has a 512 MB of RAM which ensures that the Windows 7.5 Mango is a great experience. The Windows Mango is a refreshing change from all the other operating systems available today. It has a neat, tiled structure that lets you organize everything well. You also get good gaming and office facilities from Microsoft and a brilliant keyboard. You get a 3.8 Super LCD inch 480 x 800 resolution touchscreen, with crisp and bright images and good viewing angles. The touchscreen is also very quick to respond to touches. With Windows 7.5 you also get good multitasking facilities and social integration. The phone has some good hardware and that takes care of HD videos and gaming and ensures a smooth and lag free experience. The camera is 5 MP with flash and the picture quality is really good for a 5 MP camera. You can record videos upto 720p, the quality of which was also decent. The battery is a 1520 mAh Li-ion and it gives a very good performance. You get up to two days on moderate usage.

Conclusion:

There aren’t many phones out there in the market which have a Windows 7.5 OS. The HTC Radar stands out in most aspects. The design is pure class, and the Windows 7.5 is a refreshing change. It is also very convenient and easy to use. Priced at around Rs. 16000, it is a very good bargain.
